As an effect of urban decentralization, there are large number of distressed neighborhoods and vacant lots in Downtown Buffalo Area. Most elementary schools in downtown are public education institute and school’s building isolates children from the neighborhoods. Using vacant lots as urban farms, this project aims to identify vacant parcel clusters around the elementary schools in distressed neighborhoods for possible development of Urban Farm anchored by youth.
The concept is that urban farm implemented by children’s participation as an extension of school activities by using vacant lots. This outdoor classroom will help inculcating leadership qualities, strong sense of community, group interaction as well as give children an opportunity to learn basic principles of gardening and will bring them close to the nature.
